You connect the transmitter to one end of the conductors, then trace along the wire with the handheld receiver unit. As long as the receiver sounds off, it is receiving a signal, indicating continuity. When the noise stops, you’ve found your break. If access is not a problem, a tone-generating circuit tracer may be easier to use, since it shows you the exact location of the fault. If access is a problem, a TDR may more useful since it tells you where the fault is located, as a function of distance from the device.

At one time, this test couldn’t be performed on an inactive circuit, but as noted earlier, the EXP generates its own signal, so this is no longer a problem. resistance (which is measurable) can cause a circuit to perform poorly or not at all. ABYC Standard E-11 identifies key circuits and the acceptable levels of voltage drop as a percentage of nominal voltage. For critical circuits like electronics, bilge blowers, panel feeders, and navigation lights, the limit is 3% of the nominal circuit voltage (generally either 12 or 24 V).

The unit provides a screen view to ensure that engine rpm is detected. It then advances to a horizontal tachometer-type display. Bring the engine rpm to the level of the vertical line and hold. 4 3 Now turn on electrical loads. Select critical, commonly used DC loads that you may need or use simultaneously with the engine running; for example, navigation lights, bilge pump and blower circuits, all navigation and communications equipment, and refrigeration systems.
