49 The 1974 Introduction declines to see 'much promise' in Stamboul Train, or feel much in common with the young novelist. The habitual irony which leaves nothing alone, even the strength of feeling about social injustice, is what most strikingly contradicts both these subterfuges. 1). Sometimes it is heavy as in Griinlich's declaration to Czinner, 'I am a Socialist'. It is contrived and heavy when Griinlich realises in the first pleasure of his escape that the soldiers who have let Myatt's car go through the roadblock were looking for somebody they thought more important (he can't guess whom), and he sits 'brooding on the injustice of it all'.

This is, perhaps, predictable malicious teasing by a formerly Anglican Roman-Catholic convert. But Opie's speeches are nimbly written. When he says that psychoanalysis may be more 'efficacious' than confession, the word makes his reasonableness sound prissy. When Savory joins them, Opie welcomes the prospect of 'a really interesting discussion', sounding just like a 26 Graham Greene bland English parson. Savory proposes that a novelist's role is like that of a penitent, 'confessing for the public'.

The story ends tragically for her. But the novel is enriched by Minty's comic presence and his right to the last wry comment on the world's madness is thoroughly earned. England Made Me is more experimental in style than the previous two novels. Quotations in this chapter illustrate his success with the plain, literate but 'journalistic' style of some fiction of the 1930s. Cyril Connolly's Enemies of Promise (1938) constructs a passage of it, which he calls the 'New Vernacular', from lines of Orwell, Isherwood and Hemingway, which would accommodate Greene - of whom Connolly's review of contemporary literature makes no mentionY One obvious feature is the frequency of compound sentences, often without connecting words, as in passages quoted on pp.
